Filming nature and wildlife in Africa has always been a dream of mine. The opportunity to film nature in one of the last truly wild places on Earth left me with an even great appreciation for the wildlife inhabitants of our planet.
I based my time there in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Guided by Craig Berger of Oasis Africa, it was an incredible and memorable Safari which at the end of the trip I vowed to return to capture more of this incredible place.
Initially you may think “What’s the big deal? I see elephants and rhinos in zoos and wildlife parks all the time.” But with the tables turned and you are the one in the cage, it’s a totally different experience, trust me!
When you’re between two elephants on a dirt road and you’re backing up because the one in front keeps coming towards you while the one behind you is standing his ground you know you’re not in Kansas any more!
Here’s a short film I took during my first trip To Kruger. I’m counting the days until I can return and create even more stunning nature video.

And as always, shoot the ordinary and make it extraordinary!
Kevin this is so beautiful (brings me to tears — of awe and gratitude of life). Thanks so much for sharing all that you do (and for your encouragement, too). It means the world!
Thanks Liz! Means a lot coming from a fellow artist!
I’m still learning and still improving. Course, I think you never really stop doing either. Well, at least I HOPE I still continue to improve! 🙂
I certainly want to go back to Africa as soon as I can. I think I can do much better this time around.

I totally fell in love with Africa. It is unlike any other place on the planet. I can’t wait to get back there. Now that I know what it’s like t film over there I’ll be better prepared and come back with some footage that will blow this away!
Thanks for the comment. I always appreciate it when people take the time to comment.
so beautiful !!!!!!!
Thanks Johan! Now that I have the camera I’ve wanted I really, really want to go back and shoot it right!
Beautiful stuff
What a wonderful time it was, Big Guy. I think we worked out a wonderful “hunt and shoot” collaboration that gave you more opportunity than normal. I did what I do best. You did what you do best. Next time we’ll work on river crossings. BTW, how much was that Camera and lens worth that you saved from destruction?
Hey Craig,
Now that I have the camera I want for Africa I need to be making plans to get there. I’ll have to raise some funds but with the camera I have now we’ll make this one look like a first graders first film! 🙂
I think the lens alone was like $13k or something like that.
I don’t know what we would have done if it flipped and I didn’t catch it on my leg. That would have been a pretty depressing remainder of a safari that’s for sure!!!
We’ll have to find a vehicle. I retired the Kombi and now use a Land Rover Defender 110. We could get an open game viewer.
That would be sweet!
I know we could make a great film this time around!!
